New Itinerary! Katmai is a big National Park, over 4 million acres. But virtually all visitors go to just one or two locations. That's fine with me, it leaves the rest of that massive landscape to those of us willing to explore off the beaten path. And this trip will take you there. For this trip, we will base from a new, small lodge, recently built a short flight from the village of King Salmon. With comfortable cabins, and good food, we'll feel right at home. But it's not where we sleep that makes this trip special, it's where we get to explore.
Each morning, we'll hop aboard a float plane and head out to different areas to view and photograph bears, far away from the crowds. Sure, we'll hit the famous Brooks Falls one day, but we'll visit in the evening, after the crowds are gone, and the light is best. But for the bulk of the trip, we'll be further abroad, exploring small streams to watch bears fishing for spawning salmon, or wandering sedge meadows where sows with cubs will be grazing.
Join me on this new adventure! I can't wait to get out there.
We'll meet in Anchorage in the afternoon, and have a group dinner where we can go over the schedule for travel the next morning, and get to know one another. Night in Anchorage.
We'll catch an early flight from Anchorage to the lodge in Katmai, where we'll have a couple of hours to settle in, have lunch, and then head out for our first afternoon of bear photography. Our exact destination will depend on weather and bear activity, but with the lodge's float planes ready for our use, we'll have the flexibility to get wherever has the best action.
Each morning, we'll have breakfast at the lodge and then head out to explore. We'll have picnic lunches in the field, and return to the lodge in the late afternoon or evening, depending on what we find.
Depending on the flight schedules, we'll have one more morning of bear watching before returning to catch a flight back to Anchorage. Night in Anchorage.
In the morning, we will say goodbye, or you can stick around for the optional trip extension to Seward, Alaska, where we'll spend a day on a chartered boat to photograph marine wildlife and the dramatic landscape of Kenai Fjords National Park.
